Accepting nominations for Sri Lanka's 8th Presidential elections begins

Colombo (Sri Lanka) Oct 07: Accepting nominations for the 8th Presidential Elections in Sri Lanka commenced this morning at the Auditorium of the Election Commission at Sarana Mawatha, Rajagiriya.
Nominations would be accepted between 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. today. Thereafter, objections against any candidate can be lodged from 11:00 a.m. to 12 noon.
This time record 41 candidates have placed their deposits for the presidential election by noon Sunday (06). Among them are a Buddhist monk and a woman. According to the Election Secretariat, 19 candidates representing recognized political parties, three from other political parties and 19 independent candidates are in the fray to become the next president.
The Electoral Register for 2018 will be used for the election and the total number of electors eligible to vote there under is 15,992,096.
