Former SriLankan CEO and wife surrender to CID

Colombo (Sri Lanka) Feb 6: Former SriLankan Airlines CEO Kapila Chandrasena and his wife Priyanka Niyomali Wijenayake have surrendered to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) today (06). They were arrested after surrendering to the CID.
The Attorney General has instructed the criminal Investigation Department to obtain a warrant from the courts and arrest Chandrasena and his wife on a money laundering charge. Accordingly, the Colombo Fort Magistrate issued the arrest warrant on Monday for their arrest.
The Former SriLankan Airlines CEO and his wife are implicated in a fraudulent deal with the European aircraft manufacturer Airbus.
It has been revealed that Airbus has paid $ 2 million of a $ 16 million bribe to the wife of a SriLankan Airlines executive in 2013 through a third party company to influence the purchase of ten A350 aircraft for the national carrier.
Following the report, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa ordered the authorities to investigate alleged financial irregularities in the transaction between SriLankan Airlines and Airbus.
