Colombo (Sri Lanka) August 13: Sri Lanka's Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) has made all arrangements to announce the party's candidate for the upcoming presidential election, JVP Information secretary MP Vijitha Herath said.
The party is set to to make the announcement at the National People's Rally to be held at Galle Face on August 18.
Speaking at a press conference held at the head office of the JVP at Pelawatta yesterday (12th), Herath said that they are ready to defeat the "old thieves and the new thieves" together at the election.
JVP MP said Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, the candidate presented by the Rajapaksa camp was the weakest in the camp.
Herath stressed that successive governments have brought the economy of the country to a great abyss and as a result, the current social decline has been created.
All the previous regimes have ruined the economy and created communal clashes and endangered public safety, he added.
Herath pointed out that even the religious leaders were compelled to prepare policy documents for the upcoming election due to the environment created by the previous governments. The people too have resorted to demand for an alternative power, he said.
However, these facts have been disregarded when candidates are selected and the JVP will build an alternative force to defeat the old thieves and the new thieves together, MP Herath said adding that "we would present a new leader to the country to begin a new journey to replace the old rulers who lacked financial discipline and administrative discipline."
