Sri Lanka Navy, UNODC discuss challenges in combating maritime drug trafficking

Colombo (Sri Lanka) Feb 13: Sri Lanka Navy in coordination with the United Nation's Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC) recently held a round table discussion on the challenges associated with maritime drug trafficking and other illegal activities in the high seas.
A group of UNODC officials headed by Alan Cole, Head of Global Maritime Crime Programme and a representative from Royal Australian Navy participated in the discussion with a team of Sri Lanka Navy and Coast Guard officers headed by Director General Operations Rear Admiral Nandana Jayaratne.
During the discussions the Sri Lankan officers and UNODC officials exchanged views about the legal procedure on vessels engaging in drug trafficking and other illegal activities at high seas.
They extensively discussed on jurisdiction on enforcement over vessels engage in illegal activities especially the narcotic trafficking.
