Two inmates killed, six more injured in shooting at Anuradhapura Prison during unrest

Colombo (Sri Lanka), Mar 22: Two inmates were killed and four other inmates were injured in a shooting that took place inside the Anuradhapura prison yesterday.
According to the police, the prison officials took measures to control as several inmates attempted to flee during a protest erupted in a remand cell.
The remand prisoners have reportedly staged a protest destroying prison property for barring their relatives from visiting them as a measure to prevent coronavirus spread. The prisoners had launched a protest demanding them to be released due to Coronavirus threat.
The Prison officials were compelled to open fire to prevent prisoners escaping the Prison during the protest, Police said.
Eight inmates were injured in the shooting and two inmates died after being hospitalized. Six inmates are currently receiving treatment at the Anuradhapura Hospital, state TV reported.
Police Media Spokesperson SP Jaliya Senaratne stated that no one has escaped and security has been tightened.
The Police Special Task Force, Riot Squad and Anuradhapura Police have been deployed for the security of the prison.
