Hanoi [Vietnam], February 17: In "Dedication, " Nguyen Phuong Nam attracted attention not only because of the lingering impact from " Red Rain " but also because of his complete dedication to the role. With his portrayal of Ta in " Red Rain , " Phuong Nam earned praise from both audiences and critics, helping him win three awards in the Best Supporting Actor category in 2025.
Following the success of "Red Rain ," Phuong Nam continued to challenge himself with the television series "Dedication ," produced by the People's Police Film Studio. To play Do Chien, a police officer on a special mission, he decided to shave his head to create a realistic portrayal of the character. This change in appearance not only aimed to match the character but also demonstrated his seriousness and commitment to the role.
Not content with just changing his appearance, Phuong Nam also spent time learning Lao to prepare for important scenes in the film. He said that honing his language skills helped him immerse himself more deeply in the role, creating authenticity in a multinational setting. According to the actor, he wanted every small detail of his role to be meticulously portrayed, from dialogue to inner emotions.
"In the film 'Dedication ,' I had a few scenes where I had to dress up as a monk, so the crew wanted me to use silicone for the makeup, but I still decided to shave my head bald even though I knew it would take a long time for my hair to grow back. I think this is something an actor needs to do. My wife also supported this because she thought there aren't many opportunities to get a role like the one in ' Dedication ,'" the actor shared.
According to a representative from the production company, Phuong Nam had to lose weight, shave her head, and learn Lao for a long period of time to ensure the authenticity of the character in the film.
The film is dedicated to exploring the theme of espionage, revolving around the hidden aspects and silent sacrifices of Vietnamese intelligence agents. In particular, Phuong Nam's character, Do Chien, must disguise himself as a monk and infiltrate a special environment to complete his mission. His shaved head and scenes speaking Lao are considered highlights that set him apart from the rest of the role.
Before "Red Rain ," Phuong Nam had participated in many projects, but the role of Ta helped him gain recognition for his talent and opened up many new opportunities. With "Dedication ," the actor continues to demonstrate his seriousness, willingness to change, and dedication to art.
