Geneva [Switzerland], September 25: The UN General Assembly session in New York City (USA) on September 23 witnessed countries clarifying their stance on the conflict in Gaza, in which some countries such as Qatar, Jordan and Türkiye harshly criticized Israel's military actions.
According to The Times of Israel reported yesterday, September 24, Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani said that Israel chose to escalate the war instead of trying to return the hostages held by Hamas in Gaza . Mr. al-Thani also criticized Israel's attack on the capital Doha (Qatar) on September 9 for damaging Qatar's efforts to broker a ceasefire in Gaza.
Jordan's King Abdullah II devoted almost his entire speech to condemning the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan criticized Israel for committing "genocide" in Gaza. Meanwhile, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto said the world should respect Israel 's right to security .
Also at the UN meeting, US President Donald Trump expressed his strong support for Israel, condemning Western countries' recognition of the State of Palestine. According to Reuters, Mr. Trump said that recognition would benefit Hamas the most and prolong the Gaza conflict. Previously, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu affirmed that he would not accept the State of Palestine. On September 23, President Trump met with leaders of Arab and Muslim countries. Mr. Trump emphasized Washington's stance of wanting to end the war in Gaza. The Turkish President said that the meeting between Mr. Trump and the above leaders was very effective and that a joint statement would be issued soon.
The Gaza situation was also a focus of a bilateral meeting between Mr Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron in New York. Mr Macron said that military action alone in Gaza was not enough.
"The removal of Hamas leaders is a great achievement, but the number of Hamas gunmen is still as large as in the early days, so the dissolution of Hamas is not effective. We need a comprehensive process," Mr. Macron said. The French president said Mr. Trump is the only one who can influence Israel, and also said that the owner of the White House can only win the Nobel Peace Prize if Mr. Trump stops the conflict in Gaza.
According to Al Jazeera on September 24, Israel's offensive on Gaza City has made relief work more difficult, as field hospitals are seriously lacking equipment. The G7 group of leading economies also issued a joint statement on September 24, calling on Hamas and Israel to cease fire, release hostages and open the way for aid to enter Gaza.
