Seoul [South Korea], January 28: North Korea has tested several ballistic missiles again, the South Korean military said on Tuesday.
The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) reported that the missiles were detected On Tuesday afternoon north of the North Korean capital, Pyongyang. They are said to have flown approximately 350 kilometres.
The Japanese Coastguard also reported that the projectiles flew eastward into the Sea of Japan, also known as the East Sea in Korea.
So far, there is no information on the type and exact number of missiles fired.
Show of force before party congress Both Tokyo and Seoul criticized the missile tests. The South Korean government called on North Korea to "immediately cease" such provocations.
Additionally, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi instructed her officials to gather information and ensure safety at sea and in air traffic. However, no damage from the missiles was reported.
South Korea's official news agency Yonhap described the missile launch as an "apparent military muscle-flexing" by Pyongyang ahead of an important party congress.
No official date has been announced for the significant political event, but observers expect that the 9th Congress of the Workers' Party of Korea will take place in February.
North Korea is fundamentally prohibited from firing ballistic missiles under several UN Security Council resolutions. Most recently, Pyongyang claimed to have tested a hypersonic missile on January 4.
