Ramallah [Palestine], June 23: An Israeli has been shot dead in the Palestinian city of Qalqilya in the north-west of the West Bank, according to the Israeli military. Military units have become active in the region and launched an investigation, the army announced on Saturday. The background to the attack was initially unclear. Eyewitnesses and Palestinian media reported that the victim had been shot in the morning and his car set on fire. Cars from Israel can be recognized by their yellow number plates. Palestinian licence plates are white. The city of Qalqilya is under the control of the Palestinian Authority. Israelis are generally not allowed to enter the city. The previous day, Israeli security forces killed two members of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad wanted by Israel in the West Bank, according to Israeli and Palestinian reports. Israeli forces fired on the men's car. Two other people were injured, the Palestinian news agency WAFA reported. (dpa)
